Royal wedding fashion: The dress

After yesterday’s events, it’s only natural for us to write an article on the Royal Wedding and get completely infatuated with the clothing and fascinators seen at the ceremony – we are a fashion blog after all.

Yesterday the world stood still to witness an event that would go down in royal history. On Friday 29th April 2011, the former Miss Middleton walked up the red carpeted aisle in the Abbey wearing a beautiful ivory gown complete with lace applique and floral detail – designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen.

The dress was crafted by around 20 embroiderers who worked on the spectacle for four continuous weeks, individually crafting every inch of lace motif onto the garment, having no idea that the dress was designed by Burton or that it was even going to be worn by the royal bride herself just a few months later.

The seamstresses were lead to believe that the intricate gown was being made for a period television drama, and were constantly assured that money was no object – a good job it wasn’t seeing as the total price of the dress alone came to approximately £250,000.

The lace on the Grace Kelly – inspired bridal gown detailed a rose, a thistle,  a daffodil and a shamrock to represent each nation of the United Kingdom and was followed by a train that measured almost three metres. The entire piece was made from fabrics sourced from all across the UK by different British companies, which ‘represented the best of British craftmanship’, as 36 year old Sarah Burton recently stated. ‘It was an experience of a lifetime’, she said.
